The Online Etymology Dictionary defines a touchstone as:
Black quartz, used for testing the quality of gold and silver alloys by the color of the streak made by rubbing them on it.
That's a good metaphor for a Journal - a touchstone for testing the quality of our thoughts and beliefs and values.
It's strange how much we learn about someone at a memorial service. Really, we should all try to learn the things about others that will be written in their eulogies.
